    APAIT and FACC-SFV Conducts Workshops

The Filipino American Chamber of Commerce, SFV and the Asian Pacific Aids Intervention Team (APAIT), together with our community partner St Genevieve Church Youth Ministry conducted workshop training programs such as Fostering Advocacy and Community Empowerment Skills (FACES) at St. Genevieve Meeting Room A for four (4) consecutive classes last October 23, October 30, November 6, and November 13, 2008. FACC-SFV have been actively involved in the HIV and AIDS prevention. In addition to the past 4 classes, we successfully completed the HIV and Meth workshops last November 2007, AIDS Sensitivity in December 2007 as well as HIV 101 in 2006. Our goal is to educate ourselves as well as the Asian and Pacific Islander communities of San Fernando Valley.

According to the Center of Disease Control, over 40 million people around the world are infected with HIV/AIDS and it is still growing steadily. In the US, although Asians comprise only 1% of those infected with HIV, the population is growing. HIV/AIDS continues to be a threat to the community. In LA County according to the Dept. of Health and the office of AIDS Planning and Policy, there are still new infections, and the highest incidence of new infections are among the youth. Filipinos are now highest in the current survey chart.

Having fun at the workshop.                              Liz Medrano addressing workshop participants.

We always have positive feedback from the youth participants that our workshop classes were fun, lively, interactive and very educational. On behalf of the FACC-SFV we sincerely acknowledge our community partners such as  Jury Candelario, APAIT/SSG Executive Director, along with our past facilitators, Ryyn Chua, Elizabeth Mediano, Noel Alumit, and Tim Young, who are our APAIT Program Managers and Community Research Development. We also would like to acknowledge all of the St. Genevieve Youth and Young Adults students and JP Fernandez, Director of St Genevieve Youth Ministry for actively participating in all our workshops. Special thanks goes to Leo Maranan, FACC-SFV President, Annabelle Espinosa, Board Member, Louella Eischen, past APAIT Board Member, and Board Member, Noel Omega Co-Charter Founder and Advisor, Leilani Omega, Member, and  Mary Ann R. Omega, Secretary and APAIT Special Project Chairperson.
